Abstract
In 2020, four dams may be demolished on the Klamath River near the Oregon-California border, helping to restore one of America’s premier fishing and whitewater rivers. For the first time in over a century, more than 200 miles of the Klamath could flow free to the Pacific.American Whitewater strongly favors removing the Klamath dams. The article that follows, A River Runner’s Guide to a Free-Flowing Upper Klamath, helps explain why undamming the Klamath is a boon not only for salmon and the river, but for boaters too, as miles of lost whitewater will be restored. Clearly there will be challenges for outfitters, but there are things we can do to ease their transition. In the long run, undamming the Klamath will be one of the best gifts river runners have ever received.Description
