Arkansas River, Colorado - The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, in cooperation with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, invite you to share your views about Browns Canyon of the Arkansas River National Monument at several upcoming listening sessions. The listening sessions are intended to guide the development of the Coordinated Management Plan for the National Monument and to increase understanding of how people interact with the monument, what is meaningful about it and the role it plays in the way people live, work and play.

 

Today at REI’s Denver flagship store, the BLM and Forest Service met with paddlers, climbers, and enthusiastic residents to kick off the first in a series of public listening sessions on the Plan.

These sessions are structured to allow the public to express how they best know Browns Canyon, and what areas of the National Monument they feel most connected to. How often do we visit?  What time of year (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), and what is the unique feature of BCNM that draws you to the Arkansas Valley?

This is a pilot approach to management planning for the partner agencies, and the trial will work best if we all participate.  Put these dates on your calendar, and show up!

For centuries, the granite cliffs, colorful rock outcroppings and stunning mountain vistas of Browns Canyon National Monument have attracted visitors from around the world. The area’s unusual geology and roughly 3,000-foot range in elevation support a diversity of life. The Bureau of land Management and the U.S. Forest Service jointly manage the monument. Colorado Parks and Wildlife, through the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, manages river-based recreation on the Arkansas River through Browns Canyon.
